This Old House magazine has named Spokane’s Logan neighborhood one of the best old-house neighborhoods in the West.

Located around Gonzaga University, with the Spokane River to the south, Ruby Street to the west, Hamilton Street to the east and Euclid Avenue to the north, Logan was one of Spokane’s earliest suburbs.

Parts of the neighborhood were developed in the late 1800s, and there is a significant number of late 19th and early 20th century homes. It includes the Mission Avenue Historic District.

“They contacted us back in November,” said Kathryn Burk-Hise, Spokane Preservation Advocates’ executive coordinator. “They wanted to know about a neighborhood where there was a significant stock of affordable older homes.”

Burk-Hise is not sure how This Old House picked Spokane, but said it may have something to do with the National Trust For Historic Preservation having its National Preservation Conference here later this year. The conference typically uses the host city as a working classroom to showcase historic preservation efforts.

This Old House selected 16 sites in the West, including Sandpoint, Livingston, Mont., Paradise Palms, Nev., and Baker City, Ore.

No prize, plaque or award comes with the nomination.

“Logan gets the honor of being chosen among all the cities in the country and all the neighborhoods,” said Burk-Hise. “That’s very nice.”
