Vandals women open WAC tourney with win

LAS VEGAS – Alyssa Charlston finished with 16 points and 15 rebounds Wednesday night as fourth-seeded Idaho (12-19) defeated fifth-seeded San Jose State 67-63 at the Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball tournament.

Krissy Karr added 17 points for the Vandals, who stormed to a 41-24 halftime lead.

Brittany Johnson scored 31 points for the Spartans (11-19).

The Vandals were 3-0 against SJSU this season, each time winning by five or less points.

The Vandals will meet top-seeded Fresno State at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. Fresno State swept the Vandals during the regular season, winning 72-49 on Idaho’s court and 76-68 in Fresno, Calif.
