Sunday was a perfect day for a round of golf: Shorts and T-shirts were appropriate attire under a blue sky with temperatures in the 60s. Naturally, it is the day when no high school sports are played.

By Monday it was the same old stuff, a Noah-like rainfall necessitating an ark to navigate area baseball fields during the wettest March in Spokane history.

Remarkably, area teams have somehow squeezed in a few games. The Greater Spokane League, heading into Thursday, got in two-thirds of its first 30 games – although with more rain coming the percentage likely will fall.

Gonzaga Prep and Rogers were up to date with six games played, and others had played five.

Poor Mead had played but two. University played two different schools in Saturday makeups.

Bullpups coach Brian Munhall attributed their luck to a new 150-by-150 foot infield tarp purchased last week by “a very generous donor.”

Teams have been stuck inside to hit. Fielding practice, if at all, is on the outfield grass.

G-Prep has at least put in some work on its artificial turf football field and, when the new cover arrived, has had a couple of scrimmages and been a go-to site for games.

“The tarp’s a game-changer,” Munhall said. “It’s been worth it already.”

He said the only drawback is the lack of a culvert to roll the tarp up.

“Now it takes a lot of muscle,” he said. “(Soaked with rain) it comes in at nearly 1,000 pounds.”

Ferris, one of three teams to have played five games, has been helped by contributions from parents, coach Jim Sharkey said.

“We were lucky we got those two (games against Rogers on Tuesday) in,” he said. “It was a swamp in front of the dugouts. But the field takes a lot of water and the parents have done a good job of working on the field.

“I coached on the West Side forever and never encountered anything like this.

The week that was

G-Prep (5-1) leads the GSL over Mt. Spokane and Ferris (both 4-1). … Mt. Spokane pitcher Garett Hoffnagle picked up two wins during seven innings of work. He threw three innings of relief during the 1-0 win over G-Prep and started for the win against Central Valley (2-2), allowing a total of three hits. Over the first four games Matt Green was 7 for 13 with four RBIs, Tyler Huck and Tucker Sanford had five hits apiece, the former also driving in four, the latter scoring six times. … Pitching and defense carried the Bullpups. Four hurlers, Justin Blatner, Max Graves, Alex Grzesiak and David Machtolf have allowed three earned runs, Machtolf with a 0.58 ERA in 12 innings. Zach Bonneau is batting .375 with seven RBIs, Matt Miller is at .333 with a home run and five RBIs, and Alex Gosline is at .353. …

Winless Rogers hasn’t had many highlights, but freshman Zach Day offered a glimpse of the future with a 4-for-4 game… Ferris’ Travis Key had two three-hit games and Central Valley’s Ryan Leone and Andres Morales hit safely in all four of their games. …

If early-season games are an indication, the Great Northern League is up for grabs. Clarkston leads at 4-1 but suffered a 9-4 loss to Pullman earlier this week. East Valley (1-0) one-hit Pullman (4-2) in a 10-1 win. West Valley (2-1) beat Cheney (2-4) 5-1 and split with Pullman.
