Cespedes put on DL

Yoenis Cespedes has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hand that has bothered the Oakland Athletics center fielder all week.

Cespedes complained of discomfort in his hand after taking batting practice Saturday and was scratched from the lineup shortly before the A’s faced the Detroit Tigers. About an hour earlier in the clubhouse, Cespedes declared himself “100 percent” healthy and ready to return after missing the four previous games.

Cespedes is eligible to come off the disabled list May 22. Oakland recalled Michael Taylor from Triple-A Sacramento.

Cespedes signed a $36 million, four-year deal this spring after defecting from Cuba. He is batting .245 with five homers and 21 RBIs this season, mostly in the cleanup spot.

Collin Cowgill replaced Cespedes and batted ninth.

Rare consecutive starts for Wilson

Angels starter C.J. Wilson is the first major league pitcher in 11 seasons to start consecutive games on consecutive days.

Wilson started on Saturday in the second game of the series at Texas.

In the series opener Friday night, Wilson threw only 22 pitches to five batters before a 1-hour, 56-minute rain delay in the first inning.

The left-hander didn’t return after the rain stopped.

The last major leaguer to start consecutive games was Aaron Myette for Texas on Sept. 3 and 4, 2002.
