MARTENS Richard A.

“Dick” (Age 86) Passed away peacefully on the morning of January 21st.

Dick was born to Edward and Ruth Martens on August 7, 1926, the youngest of three children.

He graduated from Deer Park High School in 1944 and joined the Army.

He served as a cook’s assistant on the USS Alena, an F.S.-13A cruiser during WWII.

After the war he earned his teaching certificate at Eastern Washington College.

He taught in the Spokane school system until 1982.

He married Peggy Hintz in September of 1950 and they had three children.

They raised their family in the red brick house Dick so loved on Peone Prairie.

After they retired they spent many wonderful years traveling the world.

Sadly Peggy passed away in 1988.

He continued to enjoy fishing and had many successful hunting and clam digging adventures in the Pacific Northwest.

Even at the end of his life Dick always appreciated a glass of whiskey and the opportunity to take someone’s money in a poker game.

Dick, a member of “the greatest generation” appreciated his country, his family and the value in hard work.

He is preceded in death by his wife Peggy and son Brody.

He is survived by his companion Pat Weninger; his children Chris and Charlie Gordon, Steve and Deanne Martens; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
