Cupich statement

My first reaction on hearing of the Holy Father’s decision to resign effective February 28, 2013, was one of sadness. I recall from my days of studying for the priesthood in the late 1960s how much his writings as an eminent theologian inspired me. Since then I have had nothing but deep admiration and affection for him.

Yet, it should not go unnoticed that his announcement comes just days before we enter into the great season of Lent, a time in which we are urged to pursue a spirit of detachment as a means of making us free to follow God’s will. I am going to use today’s announcement to center my reflections throughout the 40 days of Lent. Pope Benedict XVI once again has inspired me and deepened my admiration and affection for him.
