Hospitalized The Los Angeles Times reports that Lakers owner Jerry Buss, 79, has been hospitalized with cancer. The Times says Buss has spent time in the intensive care unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Team spokesman John Black told The Associated Press on Thursday that the team has no plans to comment on Buss’ health.

Out Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson had season-ending surgery to repair his left Achilles after the tendon was cut by a skate blade during a loss at Pittsburgh on Wednesday night. Senators general manager Bryan Murray said the surgery went well. He also said 70 percent of the tendon was cut.

Signed The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed on a two-year contract with quarterback Dennis Dixon, who spent the past season with the Baltimore Ravens on their practice squad. The 28-year-old Dixon had a standout career at Oregon when new Eagles’ coach Chip Kelly was Ducks offensive coordinator. Kelly replaced Andy Reid as Eagles coach after leading Oregon to a 46-7 mark the past four years. A fifth-round pick by Pittsburgh in 2008, Dixon has started three NFL games in five seasons. He has 402 yards passing and one touchdown on 35 for 49 passing. He’s also rushed for 56 yards and one score.
