Driver arrested after crash near Cheney injures son

Washington State Patrol troopers arrested a driver suspected of vehicular assault after a two-car collision that critically injured the man’s 8-year-old son about a mile north of Cheney on Saturday afternoon.

Both drivers were also taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, according to WSP Sgt. Kris Schweigert. About 4 p.m., a driver, whose son was in the back seat, crossed over the centerline in a no-passing zone on state Route 904, a two-lane road, and struck an oncoming car driven by a woman who was alone in the car, Schweigert said.

“They basically kissed headlights” and sideswiped each other, he said.

The driver admitted to trying to pass a slow-moving vehicle in front of him, Schweigert said. Investigators also smelled alcohol on him and submitted a search warrant to test his blood, he said.

The road was closed and investigators worked at the scene into the night.
