Pirates break through at UPS

Whitworth University (Whitworth University)
The Whitworth football team used one streak to end another Saturday afternoon. Bryan Peterson threw for 284 yards and a score and the Pirates (3-5, 1-3) snapped a five-game losing skid with a 33-14 Northwest Conference victory over Puget Sound at Peyton Field in Tacoma. It was Whitworth’s 18th consecutive win over the Loggers (1-5, 0-3). Peterson also scored a rushing touchdown for the Pirates – an 18-yard scamper to open the scoring in the first quarter. Griffin Hare also scored on the ground as Whitworth built a quick 14-0 lead. Puget Sound closed the gap to 17-7 heading into the fourth, but Peterson’s 29-yard touchdown pass to Dustin Martin and D.J. Tripoli’s 23-yard run for a score ended the Pirates’ longest losing streak since 1997. Whitworth has a bye next week and will play its final home game of the season Nov. 9 against Pacific Lutheran.
