Helton hits 2,500

Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton doubled in the seventh inning Sunday to reach 2,500 career hits. Helton was hitless in his first two at-bats with a walk when he faced reliever Curtis Partch in the bottom of the inning. He worked the count to 3-2 before lacing a double down the left-field line. He just beat the throw of Chris Heisey for his 584th career double. The crowd in Denver gave Helton a standing ovation and he tipped his helmet to the fans as he stood on second base. Helton is the 96th player in major league history to reach the milestone. He moved passed Hall of Famer Robin Yount on the career doubles list. – AP
