Cougars take series opener from Texas St.

Washington State opened a three-game nonconference baseball series with an 8-6 victory over Texas State on Friday night in Pullman.

In the bottom of the seventh with the scored tied at 6, Trek Stemp led off with his fourth hit of the game. Collin Slaybaugh followed with a bunt single. Nick Tanielu plated the go-ahead run with a single and Yale Rosen bunted for a hit to load the bases. Patrick McGrath added an insurance run with an RBI-ground out.

Softball

Whitworth (14-5, 7-2 NWC) suffered its first two losses of the Northwest Conference season, dropping a doubleheader to Pacific (10-2, 5-1) at Forest Grove, Ore.

Pacific’s Allie Sims threw a one-hitter in a 2-0 victory in the opener. Ashley Mitch’s two-run triple gave the Boxers a 2-0 lead in the first inning of a 5-1 win in the nightcap.
