Driver of stolen vehicle caught after crash into police car

From Staff Reports

A stolen car was used to ram a Spokane police car Friday morning after the car’s owner left it running in her driveway.

The owner called police at 8:15 a.m. to report that the car was missing after she had gone back inside her home after starting it up. Someone called police just after 9 a.m. to report a suspicious vehicle in the alley near Wall Street and Sinto Avenue that turned out to be the stolen car. The man driving the car rammed a police cruiser as he was attempting to get away, according to a police news release.

Officers arrested Sherman Newman, 25, after a short foot chase. A woman who was with Newman in the car was not arrested. The officer in the car that was rammed was not injured, police said.

Newman is in the Spokane County Jail facing charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, attempting to elude police and second-degree assault.
