Guetlein’s goal sparks Cougars

Kourtney Guetlein’s 89th-minute goal lifted the Washington State women’s soccer team past Oregon State 1-0 in a Pac-12 Conference opener Friday in Corvallis, Oregon.

It was Guetlein’s first goal of the season and her second career game-winner.

The Cougars (6-0-2, 1-0) play at California next Friday. Oregon State fell to 0-7-3 overall and 0-1 in the Pac-12.

• Katherine Roberts scored in double overtime and Idaho State rallied to top Eastern Washington 2-1 in a Big Sky Conference opener in Cheney.

Roberts’ game-winner came in the 108th minute. She also scored in the 80th minute to knot the game at 1.

Chloe Williams got the Eagles on the board early with a goal in the 19th minute.

• Idaho’s Kavita Battan scored off an assist from Chloe Bell in the 78th minute and host Idaho edged Northern Colorado (5-5-1, 0-1) 3-2 in a Big Sky Conference opener.

The win was the Vandals’ first of the season.

Olivia Baggerly and Gabby Leong staked Idaho (1-9, 1-0) to a 2-0 lead with goals a minute apart early in the second half.

Men’s soccer

Jordan Morris, Tomas Hilliard-Arce and Foster Langsdorf all scored goals as Stanford blanked Gonzaga 3-0 in a nonconference match in Stanford, California.

The Cardinal (6-1) held a commanding 23-3 shot total over the Bulldogs (1-6).

Volleyball

Inky Ajanaku had 11 kills, Jordan Burgess had 11 digs and Madi Bugg dished out 30 assists as Stanford (12-0, 2-0) swept Washington State (9-5, 0-2) in a Pac-12 Conference game in Stanford, California. Scores were 25-21, 25-9 and 25-20.

Kyra Holt had 10 kills for the Cougars.

Junior hockey

Michael Rand and Lincoln Lane each had a goal and an assist and the Grand Fork Border Bruins (3-5-0-0) blanked the Spokane Braves (3-2-0-1) 3-0 in a KIJHL game in Grand Forks, B.C.
