Jim Kershner’s this day in history

From our archives, 100 years ago

Spokane police were on the lookout for one of their own, a patrolman accused of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Police said two girls, 15 and 16, and a boy told them that the officer had been “going on joyrides with them” and spending the night with them in a house rented for the purpose.

Police were preparing to take the man into custody at midnight when his patrol shift ended. However, someone must have tipped him off, because he failed to return to the station. Police were searching for him in the Palouse vicinity, where the patrolman’s family lived.

From the burglar beat: Spokane deputies said they had plenty of information about the “yegg” – safecracker – who eluded them at Long Lake the day before. He went by the name Hollingsworth, and he was “a gray-eyed little chap” of about 110 pounds who was “a capable mechanic, unusually strong muscularly and a fine rifle shot.”

He had also had nine or 10 previous safe-blowing exploits and had gotten away with all of them. An accomplice who got cold feet had tipped authorities off about the Long Lake caper.

Despite all of this information, Hollingsworth was still on the loose.
