In brief: Spokane to receive more veteran rental vouchers

SPOKANE – Spokane has been chosen by the federal government to receive additional rental vouchers to help homeless veterans find permanent homes.

Spokane will receive 14 additional vouchers worth $59,000 annually, which is an increase from the 259 vouchers already approved for Spokane.

The additional funding was announced this week jointly by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The voucher program is administered through the VA and comes with case management and clinical services.

Event to raise money for garden

SPOKANE – Spokane Sister Cities Association is co-sponsoring a fundraiser for the Sister Cities Garden in Riverfront Park with Southside Senior and Community Center, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

The event will feature Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Irish and Mexican finger foods, as well as games with prizes from around the world and origami made by Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute students.

The fundraiser will be at the Southside Senior and Community Center, 3151 E. 27th Ave. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased at the senior center.

Trail mile named in honor of man

SPOKANE – Mile 23 of the Centennial Trail will be named in honor of community member Clyde Anderson during a celebration at 12:30 p.m. April 30.

A plaque will be placed on mile marker 23. The event will be at the entrance of Veteran’s Court on the north end of the Post Street Bridge.

Anderson is an honorary parks commissioner for life. He served on the state Parks and Recreation Commission from 1994 to 2007. He served as president and general manager of Inland Empire Paper Co., a division of Cowles Co., which also owns The Spokesman-Review.

COPS NW to host Shred Day

NORTHWEST SPOKANE – COPS Northwest is hosting a Shred Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.

Bring documents to the parking lot outside the COPS office at Shadle Center, 2215 W. Wellesley Ave.
