People: ‘Daily Show’ names Stewart’s successor

From Wire Reports

Trevor Noah, a 31-year-old comedian from South Africa who has contributed to “The Daily Show” a handful of times in recent months, will become Jon Stewart’s replacement as host, Comedy Central announced Monday.

Noah was chosen a little more than a month after Stewart unexpectedly announced he was leaving “The Daily Show” following 16 years as the show’s principal voice.

New Jersey native Stewart is being replaced by the son of a black South African mother and white European father. Noah has an international presence, and hosted a late-night talk show in South Africa, “Tonight With Trevor Noah.”

Noah, who has appeared on Jay Leno and David Letterman, was the subject of a 2011 documentary film by David Paul Meyer, “You Laugh but It’s True,” which followed his career in post-apartheid South Africa.

Stewart has not set a date for his exit from “The Daily Show” and, as a result, Comedy Central said nothing on Monday about when Noah would take over.

Stewart offered his endorsement on Monday.

“I’m thrilled for the show and for Trevor,” he said. “He’s a tremendous comic and talent that we’ve loved working with. … In fact, I may rejoin as a correspondent just to be part of it.”

Streaming service has celeb pedigree

Madonna, Rihanna, Beyonce and Jay Z are among the A-List musicians who are co-owners of Tidal, a streaming service being billed as the first artist-owned platform for music and video.

The membership-based service – similar to subscription service Spotify – will provide music and video content that users can stream on computers, tablets and smartphones or listen to offline. It is being offered at two price points: $10 for standard sound quality and $20 for “lossless high fidelity sound quality.”

Kanye West, Daft Punk, Alicia Keys, Jack White and Nicki Minaj also were among the artists who announced at a New York City event Monday that they are co-owners of the service that quietly launched in October.

Prince William starts helicopter job

Britain’s Prince William has started his new job – working as an air ambulance helicopter pilot.

Kensington Palace said William began work Monday for Bond Air Services, a helicopter operator that serves East Anglian Air Ambulance. He will undertake job training in the next few months – including simulator, aircraft and in-flight skills training – and start piloting missions in the summer.

William, 32, passed his Air Transport Pilot’s License exams in March, completing 14 written exams on subjects such as the principles of flight and navigation.

The second-in-line to the throne will work with medics responding to emergencies ranging from road accidents to heart attacks.
