Liberty even playoff series with Mystics

WNBA: Tina Charles scored 17 of her 22 points in the third quarter Sunday to help the New York Liberty beat the host Washington Mystics 86-68 and even their best-of-three Eastern Conference semifinals series at one game apiece.

The two teams will play the decisive Game 3 on Tuesday in New York.

Charles helped New York extend a seven-point halftime lead to 18 by the end of the third quarter.

Tayler Hill led the Mystics with 19 points, hitting six 3-pointers.

• Sparks top Lynx, tie series at one: Candace Parker scored 25 points to lead the Los Angeles Sparks over the Minnesota Lynx in Long Beach, California, and even up the Western Conference semifinals.

The two teams will play the decisive Game 3 on Tuesday in Minnesota.

Parker scored 15 points in the second quarter on 5-of-7 shooting. Maya Moore led Minnesota with 27 points.

The game was played at Long Beach State because the Emmys were held near Staples Center.

Davis Cup final: It’s Britain vs. Belgium

Miscellany: Britain and Belgium clinched 3-2 victories in the semifinals of tennis’ premier team competition to set up a rematch of their 1904 final – the last time Belgium reached the title match. Britain won 5-0 that time and will be the favorite again in November courtesy of Andy Murray, who defeated Bernard Tomic of Australia.

Steve Darcis put Belgium through by beating Federico Delbonis of Argentina in the fifth and decisive match in the other semifinal in Brussels.

In the World Group playoffs, the United States, Switzerland, Germany and Italy were among the teams to clinch a spot in the top tier next year.

The Americans will be back in the World Group for the 27th year in a row after Jack Sock beat Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in Tashkent.

• Red Bulls beat Timbers to take East lead: Felipe and Damien Perrinelle scored 3 minutes apart in the first half and the visiting New York Red Bulls beat the Portland Timbers 2-0 to become the first MLS team to clinch a playoff spot.

New York (14-8-6) moved into first place in the East.

• Spain wins Eurobasket title: Pau Gasol had a double-double and Spain cruised past Lithuania 80-63 in Lille, France, to regain the European basketball championship title.

Spain earned its third title in the last four tournaments. Gasol finished with 25 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots.

• Oilers sign Klefbom to 7-year extension: The Edmonton Oilers signed defenseman Oscar Klefbom to a seven-year contract extension.

Klefbom had 20 points, including two goals, in 60 NHL games last season. He ranked second among Oilers defensemen in points and time on ice.

• Somoa tops U.S. in Rugby World Cup: Fullback Tim Nanai-Williams scored his first try for Samoa as they beat the United States 25-16 in their bruising Rugby World Cup Pool B opener on Sunday in Brighton, England.

Samoa takes on South Africa on Saturday, while the Americans face Scotland on Sunday.
