LAS VEGAS – Pamela Capper won the first round of barrel racing with a time of 13.75 seconds – tying the record set by Mary Walker in 2012 – as the National Finals Rodeo began Thursday.

Capper, a 53-year-old rookie from Cheney, was aboard her 14-year-old brown mare Jesse. Capper took home a prize of $26,230.77 and moved up from 11th to fourth in the world standings.

Shane Proctor, 31, originally of Grand Coulee, Washington, finished second in bull riding with a score of 83.50 on Leroy Brown of the Pete Carr Rodeo string. Proctor, the 2011 World Champion, is participating in his second straight NFR and fifth in six years.

Brothers Riley (header) and Brady (heeler) Minor, from Ellensburg, tied for third in the team ropers with a time of 4.90. Riley, 28, is in his seventh NFR, while Brady, 32, is in his eighth.
