Deputies investigating a bank robbery instead nabbed a liquor thief attempting to flee a grocery store with two bottles of raspberry vodka shoved down his pants.

The shoplifting suspect is 40-year-old Jonathan B. Scafide, who was stopped wit employees in pursuit near the front door of the Safeway store at North Monroe Street and West Francis Avenue.

Scafide kept his hands hidden and refused deputies’ orders to stop, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. When he was cut off by a car, Scafide showed his hands but wouldn’t comply with other commands and was taken down to the ground by force.

Deputies recovered the two bottles of vodka from the front of his pants, the news release said. It didn’t take deputies long to determine that while Scafide may have matched the general description of the bank robber, he was not the man they were looking for.

He was cited for theft, resisting arrest and obstructing law enforcement. The bank robbery remains under investigation.
