YAKIMA – The Yakima City Council is considering a proposal to create a temporary homeless encampment on city property in northeast Yakima.

Under the plan, the city would allow a nonprofit social services agency to develop and administer the site, which could host about 30 people.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reported the proposal is aimed at addressing increased homeless camping in downtown residential areas.

Acting City Attorney Mark Kunkler said residents living near the site will be notified.

The site will require fencing, hygienic facilities and 24-hour-a-day security services.

The council is weighing the proposal at a special meeting Wednesday.
