EVERETT – Snohomish County will pay $14.3 million to a man who lost his legs after a sheriff’s deputy allegedly ran a stop sign in Everett and struck him last year.

Citing public records, the Daily Herald reported the county recently reached a settlement with 60-year-old Tom Gillette and his wife. The couple had initially sought $35 million in damages.

The county denied liability. As part of the settlement, the Darrington-area couple agreed not to sue.

Sheriff’s deputy John Sadro was driving his patrol car on April 17, 2015, when authorities say he ran a stop sign. The patrol car was hit by a car that didn’t have a stop sign. The patrol car spun and was pushed into a parked truck, pinning Gillette against his vehicle.

Sadro is charged in Snohomish County Superior Court with vehicular assault. His trial is scheduled for December.

He remains on desk duty pending the outcome of his criminal case.
