A $14 million project will update an original structure at the St. Joseph Care Center, a skilled nursing facility on the campus of Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.

New construction, at $8 million, will renovate 52,000 square feet of space on two floors in the care center’s original building, which is more than 50 years old. An addition was built to the 162-bed facility, located at 17 E. Eighth Ave., in 2009.

Remaining renovation costs will cover new furnishings and equipment to provide patient care. Contractor Graham Construction & Management expects to complete the project by early 2018.

With 72,000 square feet overall, St. Joseph provides both long-term care services and rehabilitation for orthopedic, cardiac and neurological patients to transition from hospital to home.
