Two local men escape from Yakima County lockup

Steven D. Roche (Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office)

A pair of inmates - one from Spokane and one from Post Falls - escaped from the Yakima County Correctional Center sometime late Monday or early Tuesday.

A bed check at 4 a.m. Tuesday revealed that Steven D. Roche, 31, and Chad E. Tipton, 31, were missing. The last bed check had been at 7 p.m. Monday, according to a news release from the jail.

Roche, of Spokane, was being held on burglary and grand theft charges. Tipton, of Post Falls, was being held on charges of assault with a firearm, aggravated battery, unlawful possession of a firearm and resisting arrest.

Tipton was suspected of shooting a man in the 1800 block of East Jenny Lynn Lane on Dec. 15. He was arrested on Dec. 22 after leading police on a chase through Post Falls.

A search of the facility showed a door leading from an inside recreational yard to the outside was unsecured, according to the Yakima County news release. An internal gate was also found open. “It is unknown at this time when the door was unsecured, or by whom,” the release said. “All indications are that the door would have had to be left unsecured by a staff member who had access to facility keys.”

Roche and Tipton were two of 37 inmates that Kootenai County was housing at the Yakima jail because of overcrowding, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with information on their whereabouts is asked to call 911.
