Spokane Park Board ponders fate of rides at Riverfront Park

Members of the Spokane Park Board are facing a difficult decision: what to do with the aging amusement rides from the Riverfront Park Pavilion.

Park administration officials said they would like to sell them.

The 13 rides, including the park tour train, are worth an estimated $155,000 through a sale by a ride broker.

Many of them are aging, with maintenance and paint issues. But for years, they have provided a low-cost amusement option for Spokane residents.

“For the most part, they are mechanically sound,” said Jon Moog, Riverfront Park director.

They go by names like the Dragon Coaster, bumper boats, Sizzler, SR-2 and Tilt-a-Whirl and were acquired over the years.

The city is facing storage costs if it doesn’t sell them, Moog said.

Hal McGlathery, the former Riverfront Park manager, is mounting a campaign to save them and give them space in the $65 million park redevelopment.

“I know the potential is still there for the rides,” McGlathery said.

Ted McGregor, chairman of the Riverfront Park Committee of the Park Board, called for a broader discussion of the issue of rides with the full Park Board.

He suggested selling off some of the rides and maybe keeping others even though the rides were not included in the park redevelopment plan.

Moog said the park could host traveling companies to bring rides to Riverfront Park for short stays every year.

McGregor said that plan could give park users a chance to try new, exciting rides.

McGlathery said the loss of rides will result in fewer park visitors.

In other business, the committee approved the selection of Garco Construction of Spokane and NAC Architecture to build and design the renovation of the U.S. Pavillion as part of the $65.9 million park remake.

The team will start with a $250,000 allocation for design, which could lead to a $14.5 million contract for build out.

The Riverfront Park Committee recommended the design-build allocation to the full Park Board for approval.
