Area roundup: Eastern Washington women defeat North Dakota behind 27 points from Delaney Hodgins

An 8-0 run in the final minute of play helped lift the Eastern Washington University women’s basketball team to a 74-70 Big Sky Conference victory over North Dakota on Saturday in Cheney.

The Eagles came back from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to secure their first conference win of the season.

Delaney Hodgins led Eastern (6-8, 1-1 Big Sky) with 27 points, 20 of which came in the second half – eight in the final minute of play. The senior also added 11 rebounds for her second double-double this season.

Symone Starks followed with 14 points and Mariah Cunningham added 11. Cunningham made three of four free throws down the stretch and grabbed six rebounds in only nine minutes of action.

North Dakota fell to 7-6, 0-2.

Northern Colorado 78, Idaho 72: The Vandals dug out of an early hole, took the lead into the fourth quarter, then failed to hold on in a Big Sky Conference loss to the Bears in Moscow.

Ten of Idaho’s season-high 23 turnovers came in the first quarter as Northern Colorado built a 21-12 lead. However, Idaho had a 39-27 advantage in the next two quarters, taking a 51-48 lead into the fourth. A 16-2 run late in the fourth helped Northern Colorado retake the lead and the Bears led 72-63 with 1:20 remaining. Idaho drew no closer than within five points after that point.

Geraldine McCorkell led Idaho (5-8, 1-1) with 20 points.

Northern Colorado (10-3, 2-0) was led by Savannah Smith with 24 points.

Idaho plays at Sacramento State on Thursday.

Community Colleges of Spokane 77, Edmonds/Lynnwood 60: All-tournament selections Jessica Olson and Shania Graham scored 21 points apiece to lead the Sasquatch (9-2) past the Tritons (10-3) at the Skagit Valley Tournament in Mount Vernon, Washington.

Men’s basketball

Community Colleges of Spokane 104, Whatcom 99: The Sasquatch scored 58 points in the second half to overcome a 7-point halftime deficit and defeat the Orcas in Whatcom.

Dedrick Pakootas scored 27 points, Cesar Sandoval 20 and Ryan Alexander 19 for CCS (10-3). Trazil Lane led the Orcas (6-7) with 25 points.

North Idaho 83, Medicine Hat 47: Iaian McLaughlin scored 20 points and the Cardinals rolled to victory in the final game of the Coeur d’Alene INN-vitational.

Jacob Cowley and Tyler Brimhall scored 12 points each and RayQuan Evans had eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the Cardinals.
