A man led a Spokane County Sheriff’s deputy on a chase through North Spokane County early Tuesday evening, losing his trailer, tires and tailgate before crashing his truck near the Idaho border.

The chase started a little before 5 p.m. when a deputy tried to pull over a truck hauling a small, homemade trailer, said Sheriff’s Office spokesman Deputy Mark Gregory. The man refused to pull over and the chase was on.

The deputy, who was alone during the chase as other deputies struggled to catch up, called out the details on his radio as he followed the man over gravel roads. The trailer came off and crashed in a ditch, then the tires started to shred. At one point the deputy reported that the truck’s tailgate was “swinging in the wind” before it finally came flying off.

The chase headed east on Blanchard Road before turning south on Blanchard Creek Road. The truck crashed soon after after the turn, nearly landing in a creek.

Shortly after the deputy reported he was holding the driver at gunpoint, another deputy hurrying to get to the scene slid on an icy patch and his patrol car ended up nose first in a snow bank, Gregory said. The deputy had minor bumps and bruises.

Deputies arrested 46-year-old David J. Holland, who was wanted on a felony burglary warrant from Idaho and a misdemeanor warrant from Spokane. He is also facing new charges of driving with a suspended license and attempting to elude police.

Holland complained of being injured in the crash and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
