Water main break shuts down Freya hill early Saturday

Freya Street flooded after a water main break early Saturday Jan. 14, 2017. (Spokane Police Department)

A water main break near Freya Street and Congress Avenue shut down the Freya hill just before 2 a.m. Saturday as water streamed down the street, creating an icy mess in frigid temperatures.

The Spokane Police Department temporarily turned Thor Street, which is one-way southbound, into a two-way street north of Hartson to allow traffic through.

Freya was shut down between 29th Avenue and Fifth Avenue for several hours Saturday as crews worked to fix the water main and clean up the street, which turned into a sheet of ice. The roadway was partially reopened later in the day.
