Prep state tennis: Lewis and Clark’s Kyle Fager enters 4A play as boys singles favorite

If past results are an indication of future success, Kyle Fager has to be considered a favorite in the State 4A boys tennis tournament that gets underway Friday morning at Hanford High and the Columbia Basin Racquet Club in Richland.

The Lewis and Clark senior has had his share of success at the state tournament, winning a state doubles title as a sophomore.

Last year he placed fourth in the singles tournament, losing to eventual state champion Austin Gu of Bellevue’s Newport High in the quarterfinals before battling back for a trophy.

This year Fager is the top returning player in the boys singles field and opens against Kane Vu of Bellarmine Prep, a state placer in doubles a year ago, and is seeded to play the winner of a match between Payton Namba of Newport and Gunner Harlan of Battle Ground in the quarterfinals. Namba was half of the state championship doubles team a year ago.

Fager’s sister, Brooke, is entered in the girls singles tournament for the first time. Last year, as a freshman, she was half of a state championship doubles team.

Brooke Fager opens the tournament against Tayva Jacobsen of Sumner in the first round and is seeded to face the winner of the match between Dora Varsa of Skyline and Maddie Egan of Rogers-Puyallup.

Hannah Gianan of Camas is the top returning placer from a year ago. Gianan lost a battle with Angela Schuster of Tumberline, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

Mead’s double team of brothers Edward and Eric Liu opens the boys doubles tournament against Chris Sheppert and Joey Gaylor of Skyview.

In the girls 4A doubles tournament, University’s Katie Smithgall and Randy Murrock open against Maggie Smith and Sarah Chow of Bellarmine Prep. Kjersti Strandness and Brook Goodwin of Ferris open against Erica Dillard and Mia Rosa of Thomas Jefferson.

In the 3A doubles tournament in Kennewick, Mt. Spokane’s George and Henry Johnson will play the first match of the tournament against Aiden Short and Ethan Griffith of Capital.

In the 2A boys singles tournament at the Nordstrom Tennis Center at the University of Washington, Clarkston’s Ian Best opens against Shane Lynette of Sehome, while Pullman’s Jake Pru opens against Ian Schmid of Kingston.

Clarkston’s Gregory Arthur and Don Arsenev open the doubles tournament against Cooper Shelbert and Jordan Anderson of Fife.

The Bantams’ Halle Berg opens the girls singles tournament against Faith Grisham of Columbia River while Bridget Calvert of Cheney takes on Chiara Droell of Olympic.
