Freshman RJ Cole leads talented Bison backcourt

Silas Melson will be counted on to help defend freshman point guard RJ Cole, as well as Howard’s talented wings. (Jesse Tinsley / The Spokesman-Review)

For the second game in a row, Gonzaga’s defensive attention will be on the opponent’s talented backcourt.

Freshman RJ Cole orchestrates Howard’s offense, much like point guard Demontrae Jefferson led Texas Southern’s. Cole is comfortable launching 3s or with dribble penetration. GU’s Josh Perkins did a commendable job on Jefferson.

Howard also has scoring threats in 6-foot-6 wing Charles Williams and 6-5 reserve guard Kyle Foster, a 3-point specialist. The Zags will probably turn to Silas Melson to defend the wings or line up against Cole at times.
