Area roundup: Washington State women’s soccer upsets No. 14 Nebraska

Morgan Weaver scored in the 69th minute and Washington State (2-1-1) upset No. 14 Nebraska (4-1-0) in the Cougar Classic in Pullman on Friday. Kelsee Crenshaw cleared the corner and fed Weaver, whose one-touch went right-side to the far post for the score of the game. Ella Dederick made four saves for the clean sheet.

Olivia Baggerly scored on a header goal in the 75th minute and Idaho (2-2-1) edged visiting Hawaii (2-3) in a nonconference matchup. Makayla Presgrave made five saves in the shutout. … Chelsea Gnan recorded a hat trick and Wheaton (Illinois) topped visiting Whitworth 4-1 in a nonconference game in the season opener for both teams. Leah Corra tallied for the Pirates. … Sydney Clements opened the scoring in the seventh minute and CC Spokane (1-2) shutout visiting Everett (1-3) 3-0 in a nonconference game at SFCC. … Isabelle Creighton had two goals and visiting Tacoma (2-2) topped North Idaho (1-2) in a nonconference game. Chelsea Love scored her second of the season for the Cardinals.

Men’s soccer

Christo Michaelson’s header in the 78th minute was the difference as Gonzaga improved to 2-0 with a 1-0 win over UC Riverside in the Gonzaga Tournament. Ben White collected a bouncing ball and chipped it near the net to find Michaelson for the game-winner, his second goal of the year. Ben Willis pitched his first shutout of the season in goal and stopped a penalty kick in the 40th minute. … Max Lopez scored the game winning goal in the 84th minute off a back-heel pass to secure a 2-1 victory for ninth-ranked Chicago (1-0) over visiting Whitworth (0-1) in a nonconference game in the first game of the season for both squads. Micah Weller scored for the Pirates … Ian Schimandle, Arturo Bahena and Hector Magana scored two goals apiece and CC Spokane (2-1-1) blanked visiting Everett (1-2-1) 8-0 in a nonconference game at SFCC. Javier Chavez and Nick Frost added goals. … Tacoma (3-1) beat host North Idaho (0-3) 2-1.

Volleyball

Jocelyn Urias had a career-high nine kills with a career-high eight blocks and Washington State (4-1) swept Quinnipiac (0-7) (25-16, 25-20, 25-17) in the first game at the Cougar Challenge Tournament in Pullman on Friday. In their second game of the tournament, the Cougars moved to 5-1, sweeping College of Charleston (25-21, 25-22, 25-12). Mims Taylor had 11 kills in the second game. … Sarah Penner recorded 19 kills and Gonzaga (1-3) won a close fifth game to beat Arizona State (4-1) (18-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 15-13) in the Gonzaga Invitational. Faith Smith had 36 assists and six digs for the Zags. …Katy Keenan had 12 kills and Missy Owens registered 38 assists and Texas Tech (3-0) swept Eastern Washington (1-3) (25-14, 25-22, 25-22) at the Cal Classic in Berkeley, California. Ashley Seiler led the Eagles with nine kills and eight digs. … Kaela Straw had 25 kills, Haylee Mathis added 56 assists and three service aces and Idaho (1-4) edged Illinois-Chicago (2-2) 3-2 (26-24, 30-32, 25-20, 22-25, 15-13) in the UIC Tournament in Chicago. … Whitworth opened its season with a pair of wins at the Oregon Trail Classic at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. The Pirates defeated Montana-Western 3-1 (28-26, 25-19, 26-28, 25-12) in the first match and rolled past Schreiner (Texas) 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-20) in the second contest. Gracie Meiners finished the day with 71 assists for the Pirates. Emiko Kahler had 17 kills to lead the Bucs offensively. … North Idaho swept a pair of matches against Grays Harbor (25-11, 25-19) and Pierce at the Highline Tournament in Des Moines, Washington.

Cross country

Jake Perrin’s first-place finish (18 minutes, 35.97 seconds) led Gonzaga men’s cross country team to the team title at the season-opening Clash of the Inland Northwest at the University of Montana Golf Course in Missoula. Gonzaga placed six runners in the top 10. Jordan Thurston led the Zags women with a fifth-place finish. Gonzaga women won two of their three duals, beating out Eastern Washington and Montana, but falling to Idaho. … Colton Johnsen and Kari Hamilton-Scharnhorst led Eastern Washington at the Clash. Johnsen finished sixth overall on the men’s side with a personal best of 18:45.96. Hamilton also finished sixth overall with a time of 14:33.68. … Andrea Condie of Idaho posted the best individual women’s time at 14:11:60. Grayson Ollar was the Vandals’ top men’s runner at 18:40:89. … Kayla Leland finished fourth overall and the first non-Division I placer at 14 minutes, 29.23 seconds, leading the Whitworth women past Lewis-Clark State at the Clash. Come Nzibarega was the top finisher for the Whitworth men, crossing third in the non-DI race with a time of 19:28.47. The Pirate women defeated the Warriors 21-40, while the LCSC men defeated the Bucs 18-43.
