Davenport Hotels has found a new manufacturer for its luxury mattresses.

Sound Sleep of Sumner, Washington, has taken over production of the Davenport Hotel Pillow Top line after Northwest Bedding closed down in July.

“We were like, ‘Oh my gosh, what will we do? We sell a lot of beds,’” said Matt Jensen, the Davenport Hotels’ corporate director of sales and marketing.

Fortunately, Northwest Bedding’s production manager and marketing officer were hired by Sound Sleep, with plans to continue the line with the same materials, design and specifications, Jensen said.

Davenport Hotels’ four properties use the mattresses in their guest rooms and also sell them in the gift store and online. A queen-sized mattress and box springs retails for $1,399 and a king-sized set retails for $1,699.

Northwest Bedding was a Spokane institution for more than 50 years. Besides the pillow top design, the company was known for its catchy TV jingles and the specialty latex, called talalay, in its mattresses.

The latex kept the mattress from retaining heat, and hotel guests noticed, a former Northwest Bedding employee said in an earlier interview. Neil Diamond bought one of the mattresses after a Spokane concert and stay at The Historic Davenport.

Sound Sleep delivers the mattresses to Davenport Hotels, which is continuing home delivery for customers, Jensen said.

Davenport Hotels’ guests who decide to purchase a mattress can get their room rate credited to the purchase of a bed, in an amount up to $249.

Staying at the Davenport is “a great way to try out a mattress,” Jensen said.
