Police are warning drivers to avoid roads as ice and snow builds up into Wednesday night.

Between 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., 11 incidents were reported because of the snow, mostly in west and south Spokane, and no injuries were reported, according to a dispatcher at the Spokane Fire Department.

“Roads are horrible,” Spokane police tweeted Wednesday. “Secondary arterials and side streets are extremely slick. If you don’t have to drive, then don’t. Also, if possible try to avoid the South Hill as vehicles are having problems on some of the hills.”

Snow is expected to fall until 4 a.m. Thursday, with the heaviest snow at 9 or 10 p.m. Wednesday, said National Weather Service meteorologist Jeffrey Cote.

Cote said he expects 1 to 3 inches in total. At about 4:30 p.m., Spokane International Airport had reported about 1.3 inches of snow, he said.

Temperatures aren’t going to get above freezing until Saturday, Cote said, except downtown Spokane, which might hit 33 degrees Thursday.
