GSL girls: Central Valley turns up defense in second half to rout Mt. Spokane

Central Valley faced some resistance from a league opponent on Tuesday night. Then it pushed back.

The Bears led visiting Mt. Spokane by single digits at halftime but then turned up the intensity, limiting the Wildcats to seven second-half points to remain undefeated with a 73-32 win.

CV (17-0, 11-0), rated No. 1 in Class 4A in WIAA’s RPI system, has outscored its league opponents by 42.8 points this season.

The Bears led 22-8 after consecutive shots by Hailey Christopher, Lexie Hull and Mady Simmelink at the end of the first quarter. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Mt. Spokane’s Alyssa Powell and Aspyn Adams jumpstarted the Wildcats’ offense and they outscored the Bears 17-10 in the second quarter.

But Central Valley’s defense applied pressure in the second half and limited the Wildcats to four points in the third and three in the fourth.

Lexie Hull led CV with 21 points while Christopher and Tomekia Whitman added 10 points apiece.

Adams paced Mt. Spokane (9-8, 6-4) with 10 points.

Lewis and Clark 69, Rogers 9: Emma Maxwell scored 13 points and the visiting Tigers (11-6, 9-2) defeated the Pirates (1-16, 0-9). Kaylee Bishop tallied four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points for Lewis and Clark, while Jaimyn Sides and Jacinta Buckley added 10 points apiece. Lewis and Clark, which is rated No. 13 in Class 4A, outscored Rogers 25-0 in the second half.

Gonzaga Prep 59, North Central 35: Mia Scelfo collected 15 points with six rebounds and the Bullpups (10-7, 6-5) used a second-half surge to beat the visiting Indians (10-8, 5-4). Kerynica Keyes added 12 points for Gonzaga Prep, which went on a 23-7 third-quarter spurt and limited NC to 11 second-half points. Quincy McDeid sank three 3-pointers and led North Central with 14 points.

Mead 72, Ferris 47: Lindsey Russell scored 19 points, McKenna Russell added 14 and the Panthers (7-10, 5-7) handled the visiting Saxons (2-15, 1-10). Jordynn Hutchinson contributed 11 points for Mead, while Mayson Younger led Ferris with 19 points and Sarah Figg added 16.

University 69, Shadle Park 29: Claire Dingus scored 20 points and the Titans (11-6, 8-3) routed the visiting Highlanders (2-15, 1-8). Ellie Boni had 15 points for University and Kinsley Barrington added 11. Willow Risinger led Shadle Park with 10 points, while Jillian Groves nailed three 3-pointers and finished with nine points.
