Mariners’ Edgar Martinez falls short of election to National Baseball Hall of Fame
Edgar Martinez’s call from Cooperstown will have to wait one more year.
The former Seattle Mariners designated hitter fell short of the 75 percent threshold needed for election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Wednesday. Martinez was named on 70.4 percent of the ballots, up from 58.8 percent in 2017.
Martinez has one year remaining on the ballot.
Four players were inducted into the Hall of Fame this year – Chipper Jones, Vladimir Guerrero, Jim Thome and Trevor Hoffman.
Martinez spent all 18 of his seasons in the majors with the Mariners, finishing with a career batting average of .312, 514 doubles and 1,261 RBIs.
Martinez was named an All-Star seven times and won five Silver Slugger awards.
The award given annually to the best designated hitter is also named after Martinez.
