Sandpoint retirement home resident opens fire on employee Saturday evening

Police say a resident at a Sandpoint retirement home shot at an employee Saturday evening.

The victim told police that James Raftery, 63, pulled a pistol from his waist, leveled it and fired it at least once. Police said nobody was injured.

At about 7 p.m., Sandpoint police and Bonner County Sheriff’s officers responded to Huckleberry Retirement home at 1408 Ponderosa Drive on a report of shots fired.

Witnesses reported Raftery returned to his room and retrieved a .22-caliber handgun while facility residents evacuated.

A brief standoff with police followed, ending in Raftery’s surrender and arrest.

He was charged Monday with aggravated assault, according to the Bonner County jail roster.
