Prep football: Adam Moorhead’s touchdown pass advances Newport to State 1A semifinals

From staff reports

Adam Moorhead threw a first quarter touchdown pass to Jacob Kirkwood with 33 seconds left in the first half and 10th-seeded Newport (10-1) upset second-seeded Zillah (10-1) 7-6 at Grandview HS in a Washington State 1A quarterfinals game.

Moorhead’s throw ended up being the game-winning touchdown as the Grizzlies held the Leopards to only six points.

Newport advances to play third-seeded Hoquiam/sixth-seeded Lynden Christian on November 24.

The Grizzlies blocked the PAT attempt after a fourth-quarter touchdown brought the Leopards within one.

This is the second season in a row that Newport has knocked out Zillah from the state tournament.

Moorhead totaled 204 yards through the air.
