MOSCOW, Idaho – Goodwill in Moscow was closed Thursday afternoon after a World War II-era land mine, possibly active, was donated to the store.

Those traveling near Goodwill were encouraged to avoid the area, as the device had not been destroyed.

Moscow police shut down the Goodwill store and its parking lot, while Planet 3 recreation center, Bellevue Health, Deranleau’s Appliances and the east half of the LaQuinta Inn were evacuated.

Moscow Fire Chief Brian Nickerson said a bomb squad from Fairchild Air Force Base came to destroy the device.

The report of the explosive came over the scanner at about 4:40 p.m., and the area was reopened hours later after the squad removed the device, the Moscow-Pullman Daily News reported..
