Taylor Poffenroth drove in five of his six runs in Whitworth’s nine-run fifth inning Friday as the Pirates routed Linfield 18-5 in a Northwest Conference game at Merkel Field.

With Whitworth trailing 5-1, Poffenroth began the Pirates’ comeback with a three-run homer and capped it with a two-run single. Poffenroth went 3 for 4, Joe Howell went 3 for 5 with three RBIs, and JJ Fahnlander hit his first career homer, a two-run shot, in the eighth for Whitworth (21-11, 18-4 NWC). Mathew Pulliam got the win, his first, with four scoreless innings in relief.

The NWC champion Pirates end their regular season with a doubleheader today against the Wildcats (6-27, 3-19). Twelve Whitworth seniors will be honored prior to the first game.

Gonzaga 10, Santa Clara 2: Nick Nyquist doubled, tripled and homered, driving in five runs and powering the Bulldogs (18-15, 11-6 West Coast Conference) over the Broncos (7-28, 2-12) in Santa Clara, California.

USC 10, WSU 1: The Trojans (17-20, 8-9 Pac-12) scored five runs in the second inning and breezed past the Cougars (8-27, 1-13) in Pullman.

Women’s golf

Gonzaga finished the second round two shots off the lead at the West Coast Conference Championships at Manito Golf and Country Club.

The Bulldogs are plus-26 on the par-71 course, trailing Pepperdine by two strokes and BYU by one.
