Flathead High School announced on Tuesday that Matt Upham will become the next head coach of the Braves football program. Upham spent the past four seasons as Flathead’s defensive coordinator. He was one of three finalists to become the next head coach, all three of which were assistant coaches under previous head coach Kyle Samson. The announcement comes nearly two months since the announcement that Samson was leaving his position as Flathead head coach in order to become the offensive coordinator at Montana Tech. Upham teaches math at Flathead High and has been part of the Braves’ resurgence in class AA football with Flathead making the playoffs three of the last four years, including a title game appearance in 2018, the first for the program since the 2000 season. Upham is a Helena High graduate where he was a standout quarterback for the Bengals before playing safety at Carroll College from 2010-2013.
