Man suspected of causing school bus crash in north Spokane arrested on assault charges

A man suspected of causing a crash involving a school bus and another car will face vehicular assault charges, Spokane police said.

Officers responded to a crash at Ash Street and Rowan Avenue at about 4 p.m. Wednesday after a car did not stop at a stop sign.

Edward Ellenz, 81, drove the vehicle that failed to stop and had minor injuries, according to a Spokane Police Department statement.

After receiving medical treatment, he was booked into Spokane County Jail on two counts of vehicular assault.

Police said alcohol appeared to be a factor in the collision, but they continue to investigate.

The crash involved one other car and a school bus with children on board. The children were not injured.

The other car involved was driven by a 29-year-old woman who likely suffered a broken wrist, police said. Her 5-year-old passenger had a cut lip, black eye and bruising. They were taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.
