Capitol press offices in Olympia burglarized

OLYMPIA – A building on the Capitol campus that contains offices for reporters was broken into and vandalized late Thursday night or Friday morning.

The Carlyon House, also known as the Blue Press House, was illegally entered by one or more people who tossed articles on the floor, piled them into garbage containers or threw them out of windows. They also tore posters and decoration off walls and stole political memorabilia and other items.

The building, one of two former residential structures occupied by reporters covering the Capitol, contains offices for The Spokesman-Review, the Seattle Times and the Everett Herald. The Washington State Patrol, which provides security for the campus, is investigating the break-in.

The historic house is about 100 years old and was originally built for the family of P.H. Carlyon, an early mayor of Olympia and later a member of the Legislature. It is owned by the state, which leases space to news outlets.
