Mary J. Porter, a biology teacher at Rogers High School, recently received a national award for Excellence in Community Service from the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Porter was recommended by the Spokane Garry Chapter.

The ninth- and 10th-grade teacher uses the real world as a classroom, having her students incorporate environmental projects in their studies, said Elizabeth Clodfelter, regent of the Spokane Garry Chapter.

For several years, Porter’s classes focused on Beacon Hill, cleaning trash and working with residents to eliminate off-road vehicles from the hill.

Her most recent project is at Drumheller Springs Park, where students are working to make it a “natural area” with native plants, shrubs and trees.

Some 900 plants are now flourishing and birds and small animals are returning to the park, Clodfelter said.

The Inland American Automobile Association has received the 1994 Transportation Safety Council Award from the Institute of Traffic Engineers.

The organization was recognized for more than 60 years of pioneering efforts in promoting highway safety in school safety patrol programs, traffic engineering assistance to communities, motorist assistance programs and more.

Eudona Nadine Harvey, a senior majoring in special education at Greenville (Ill.) College, was named to the 1995 edition of “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.”

Harvey is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Harvey, Rathdrum, Idaho.
