The Society of Orpheus and Bacchus, Yale University’s all-male a cappella singing group, will appear in Spokane and Sandpoint this weekend as part of a tour of the Northern Rockies.

The SOBs, as they are affectionately known at Yale, are the second-oldest collegiate a cappella group in the country, second only to the Whiffenpoofs. They are the only group allowed to share the Whiffenpoofs’ weekly engagement status at Mory’s Temple Bar in New Haven, Conn.

Their music includes jazz, blues and gospel as well as something they call “ragtime funk-a-bee-bop champetre with an evil twist of high urbanity.” Their concerts also include skits, stories and improvisational humor.

The Spokane show will be Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Spokane Civic Theatre, 1020 N. Howard. General admission tickets are $7, $5 for students. Call 747-1321 for information and reservations.

The Sandpoint concert will be an informal concert tonight during the dinner hour at Swan’s Landing. The show is free for diners at the restaurant.

The tour is being organized by Jason Lear, a graduate of Mead High School, who is the director of the group.
