Coffee Table Also A Display Case

Don And Dave Runyan U-Bild Features

Here’s a good project for do-it-yourselfers interested in building a sturdy, handsome coffee table for the living room or den as well as a safe place to store and display prized collectibles.

Built primarily from oak and oak plywood, this curio coffee table is topped with a piece of heavy glass. The table’s top drawer provides almost four square feet of display space and can be lined with felt to protect its contents from scratches. The bottom drawer provides additional storage.

Although the table pictured here was built from oak, different woods like pine, Douglas fir or cherry can be used. In all, the project requires two sheets of plywood, oak and oak dowels, wood knobs and glass, plus nails, wood screws, stain and finish. Tempered glass can be used for greater safety.

Since all of the project’s cuts are straight cuts, sizing and sawing them is simple. When completed, the curio table measures 37 inches long by 23 inches deep by 17 inches tall.

The Curio Coffee Table plan, No. 854, is $7.95 and includes complete step-by-step instructions with 12 photos, exploded isometric drawings, plywood layouts, a shopping list and a cutting schedule.

A package of coffee table plans, No. C89, is $14.95 and includes plans for this project and two others. A catalog picturing hundreds of do-it-yourself projects is $3.95. Prices include postage and handling (for first-class mail, add $1 per item up to $3 maximum).
