Christmas is a time of good cheer, good food, family and presents under the tree.

But as we rush from store to store picking up last-minute gifts, it’s important to remember that some people don’t have any presents to put under the tree - if there is even a tree.

Some people in Spokane can’t even afford a special meal on the holiday.

In the giving spirit of the season, at least three churches will serve free community dinners on Christmas Day.

Central United Methodist Church, 518 W. Third, will serve dinner from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information, call 838-1431.

St. Charles Roman Catholic Church, 4515 N. Alberta, will serve dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. For transportation, call 327-9573 or 327-4344.

City Gate Fellowship, 114 S. Madison, will serve a meal from 1 to 5 p.m. and will give a small gift to everyone attending. For more information, call 455-9670.

Downtown caroling planned

The streets of downtown will be filled with music Sunday during the annual Nightwalk Youth Group Christmas Caroling, sponsored by the Spokane Council of Ecumenical Ministries.

Beginning at 7 p.m., the group will carol at low-income hotels and apartments and outside several bars.

The carolers will start and finish at Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ, 411 S. Washington.

Baha’i anniversary to be noted

On Sunday, members of the Baha’i Faith will celebrate 90 years of worship in Spokane.

A public gathering will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Avalon Dance Studio, 115 E. Boone. Archival materials from the early 1900s will be displayed.

Annie Belle Killius first brought the Baha’i Faith to Spokane 90 years ago.
