‘Grease’ Returns To Cda

Roll up those T-shirt sleeves and comb that ducktail - “Grease” is back in Coeur d’Alene.

This 1950s rock ‘n’ roll musical kicks off the Lake City Playhouse season Friday and continues through Oct. 4.

It was a Broadway smash in 1972, and then became a hit movie. Almost everybody knows the story of this musical by now: Sandy Dumbrowski is the new girl in school. Will she find true love with tough guy Danny Zuko?

The story is told against a backdrop of burger palaces, drive-in movies and high school proms. Among the big songs: “Look At Me, I’m Sandra Dee” and “Greased Lightning.”

David Denman Smith is the director. This production is sponsored by North Idaho Title and Mountain West Bank, with support from the Idaho Commission on the Arts.

“Grease” opens Friday and continues Saturday, Sunday and Sept. 26-28 and Oct. 2-4. All shows are at 8 p.m. except Sunday shows at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and students and $8 for children 12 and under. Call (208) 667-1323 for reservations. The Lake City Playhouse is Coeur d’Alene’s community theater, located at 14th and Garden in Coeur d’Alene.

Whitworth plays

James McLure’s mesquite-scented one-act plays, “Laundry and Bourbon” and “Lone Star,” will be presented by an ensemble of Whitworth College senior theater students beginning tonight.

These two plays were written as comic companion pieces. In “Laundry and Bourbon,” two Texas housewives sit on a front porch and share their hopes, fears and frustrations.

In “Lone Star,” two men sit out behind a Texas bar and swap stories. One of the men is Roy, who is the husband of one of the housewives in “Laundry and Bourbon.”

Diana Trotter directs “Laundry” and Rick Hornor directs “Lone Star.” Both are Whitworth theater faculty members. All roles are played by Whitworth seniors.

The show opens tonight and continues Friday, Saturday and Sept. 25-27. All shows are at 8 p.m. in Stage II of the Cowles Auditorium at Whitworth. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for students, available at the door or by calling 777-3707.

‘Cream of Wit’

Spokane’s branch of Unexpected Productions, an improvisational comedy troupe, cranks up its fall season Friday.

This group performs improvised scenes, based on suggestions from the audience.

Look for them at 9 p.m. Friday at the Spokane Falls Community College Theatre, Building 5.

Tickets are $6 or $5 with student ID. For reservations, call 747-7045.
