Youth Symphony travels globe in finale
Argentina, Mexico, England, Russia among compositions’ origins
The Spokane Youth Symphony will go global Sunday at The Fox.
Some 125 musicians in two of the symphony’s four ensembles – the Spokane Youth Philharmonic and the Spokane Youth Symphony Orchestra – will perform.
The program includes pieces by Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, Mexican composer Samuel Zyman, English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Russia’s Dimitri Shostakovich, among others. The concert is the last of the symphony’s 2012-13 “One World” season.
The musicians, ages 9 to 21, will be joined by participants in the youth symphony’s intermediate wind ensemble, nominated by music teachers for five weeks of expert instruction last winter.
Before the concert, Julian Gómez Giraldo, the youth symphony’s artistic director and conductor, will talk about the role of each composition as part of the program. The talk starts at 3:15 p.m. at The Fox.
