A porcupine peers at photographer Buck Domitrovich on Dec. 17 at Turnbull Wildlife Refuge.

Domitrovich was only a few feet away from the prickly rodent. Porcupines actually have soft hair but it is mixed with razor sharp quills. Although it was once believed that porcupines could shoot their quills that’s not the case, although the quills do detach easily.
