Lovers of Dorothy Dean’s Homemaker’s Service flooded my e-mail, voice mail and mailbox with notes, photos and favorite recipes after an item in last week’s Fresh Sheet asking readers to share their recollections. It was wonderful to hear stories about how many of those cookbooks are still in use and the family memories that have been made along with the recipes inside.

Watch for a story about what would have been the 75th anniversary of the Dorothy Dean department in next Wednesday’s Food section. We’ll be sharing some of the history of the service, along favorite recipes and stories from readers. We’ll offer a few of the sample leaflets and recipes on our website and announce the winner of our drawing.

Food for everyone

A handful of local restaurants are participating in The One World Everybody Eats challenge on Saturday to celebrate World Food Day.

The restaurants will offer a menu item or meal free that day to help participants “imagine a day when everyone in the world can eat.”

World Food Day is meant to increase awareness, understanding and year-round action to alleviate hunger. Donations collected will be donated to local food-related charities.

In the Spokane area, participants include:

• One World Café, 1804 E. Sprague Ave., lunch menu.

• Santé Restaurant and Charcuterie, 404 W. Main Ave., pancake and egg breakfast special.

• The Checkerboard Tavern, 1716 E. Sprague Ave., meatball sub sandwiches.

• Fresh Abundance, 2015 N. Division St., soup from noon to 6 p.m.
