2018: Outdoor transitions
Died: Legendary ski filmmaker Warren Miller, 93, died in January. Coeur d’Alene’s Dan Herby, who appeared in three Miller films, remembered him fondly.
Died: Coeur d’Alene climber Alexander J. Reed, 20, fell to his death while climbing at Smith Rock State Park in April.
Retired: Longtime spokeswoman for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Madonna Luers, retired in August.
Retired: Legendary bike mechanic Dave Mannino turned in his tools in January, although the meticulous craftsman still works occasionally.
Hired: Kelly Susewind started as the head honcho at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife in August. His first months were eventful, with starving orcas, wolf depredation and a looming budget crisis all grabbing headlines.
Hired: Ed Schriever will take over as director of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game on Jan. 13, replacing Virgil Moore, who is retiring. The deputy director has been with the department for 35 years, his entire career.
